Grade 6 –Polar Express Writing project. We will read the story Polar Express and use it as a writing prompt.

Library Concept: Determining author’s point of view.

Competencies: Determine author’s point of view or purpose in text.

Common core standard: CC1.2.D

 

Grade 5 – Mystery Writing Project. Collaborative writing inspired by images from the Mysteries of Harris Burdick.

Objective: Students will select which image from the Mysteries of Harris Burdick they will use to write their stories.

Library Information Concepts: Using images to inspire writing.

Competencies: Working together to develop a story. Using images to inspire thinking.

Common Core Standard:  CC: W.5.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

 

 

Grade 4 – Read: The Day before Christmas. The story of how Clement Clark Moore was inspired to write his classic poem.

Library Concept: Identifying Main Idea.

Competencies: Restate part of text read aloud or presented orally or in other media formats.  Use own words when restating.

Common core standard: CC1.5.B

Grade 3 – Read: Brown Paper Teddy Bear. Discuss story.

Competencies: Identify main ideas and supporting details of text read aloud or presented orally or in other media formats.

Common core standard: CC1.5.B

 

Grade 2 – Read: Dewey’s Christmas. Discuss story.

Competencies: Describe key ideas from text read aloud or presented orally or in another format.

Common core standard: CC1.5.B

 

Grade 1 – Read: Mouse before Christmas and An Elf for Christmas. Discuss stories and author/illustrator Michael Garland.

Competencies: Confirm understanding of text read aloud or presented orally by asking and answering questions about key details.

Common core standard: CC1.5.B

 

Kindergarten – Read: Max and Ruby’s Christmas. and Max and Ruby’s Christmas Tree. Discuss stories.

Competencies: With support, identify why author uses certain details to support points in text.

Common core standard: CC1.2.H

Competencies: Ask and answer questions about key details in text read aloud or presented orally.

 Common core standard: CC1.5.B
