Cycle 6 Lessons
November 14 – December 1, 2016
Grade 6 – Using the Internet. A look at using the Internet to research topics as well as staying safe on-line.
Competencies: Independently access and locate information in on-line resources.

Grade 5 – Mystery Writing Project. Collaborative writing inspired by images from the Mysteries of Harris Burdick.
Objective: Students will be introduced to the elements of mysteries and expectations for their collaborative writing project.
Library Information Concepts: Using images to inspire writing.
Competencies: Working together to develop a story. Using images to inspire thinking.
Common Core Standard:  CC: W.5.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.


Grade 4 – Types of writing. We will watch a DVD on the different types of writing and discuss.
Objective: Identify and understand the different types of writing.
Essential question: How do writers vary their writing for differing audiences and purposes?


Grade 3 – “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” We will watch the video of the Washington Irving classic.
Competencies: Describe key ideas from text read aloud or presented orally or in another format.


Grade 2 – Read: Cranberry Thanksgiving.
Competencies: Describe key ideas from text read aloud or presented orally or in another format.

Grade 1 – Read: “Gus the Pilgrim Turkey.”
Competencies: Confirm understanding of text read aloud or presented orally by asking and answering questions about key details.


Kindergarten – Read: “Off to Plymouth Rock.”
Competencies: Confirm understanding of text read aloud or presented orally by asking and answering questions about key details.

Grade 6  (9:00-9:45)
Citing sources of information. Students will be shown how to cite sources of information and create a citation in the MLA style. They will understand need for citing sources and the dangers of plagiarism.
Competencies: Create a list of sources used.
Common Core Standard: CC.1.4.W

Grade 4   (9:45-10:30)
Unit on dictionaries and their use.
We will go over dictionary use and do a worksheet for hands on experience.
Library information concepts: Selecting informational texts & literary non-fiction.
Competencies: Independently use various print and digital reference sources.

Grade 3   (10:30-11:15)
 A look at the different genres in fiction. Read: Zathura if time allows.
Competencies: Independently, select grade-level-appropriate literary fiction in a variety of genres.
Common Core Standard: CC.1.3.K (3-5)

Grade 5  (11:15-12:00)
Lesson: Dewey Decimal System
Activity: Lesson on how the Dewey Decimal System organizes library materials. View DVD on the Dewey Decimal System.
Competencies: Independently, locate and select literary non-fiction and informational texts on grade level.
Common Core Standards: CC.1.1.5.E  Read with accuracy and fluency.
Essential questions: 1.. What is the Dewey Decimal System?

Grade 2   (12:30-1:15)
Read and discuss. The Widow’s Broom by Chris Van Allsburg.
Competencies: Describe key ideas from text read aloud or presented orally or in another format.

Grade 1  (1:30-2:15)
Read and discuss. Miss Smith’s Incredible Storybook.
Competencies: Confirm understanding of text read aloud or presented orally by asking and answering questions about key details.

KDG  (2:15-3:00)

Read and discuss. Noodles, I’m No Turkey and Thanksgiving Cats.
Competencies: With support, identify why author uses certain details to support points in text.
