September 24 – October 7, 2014

The Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the library October 6-10, 2014. The fair will also be open for the evening sale on Monday, October 6th. From 4:00 – 7:00 PM.

Classes leading up to the book fair will be viewing the Book Fair Preview as well as have Book Talks on some of the featured books.

LESSONS Cycle 2 Weeks3-4
September 10-23, 2014

Grade 6   
Lesson: On-line Resources: A lesson on on-line resources available through Power Library.
Competencies: Independently access and locate information in on-line resources.
Essential questions: 1. What is an on-line resource.


Grade 5 
Lesson: Book Talk! Using books that will be featured in the upcoming Book Fair we will do a book talk on some of the grade appropriate titles.
Competencies: Independently, select grade-level appropriate literary fiction in a variety of genres.
Common Core Standards:  CC.1.3.5.K   Read and comprehend literary fiction on grade level, reading independently and proficiently.  CC.1.1.5.E  Read with accuracy and fluency.
Essential questions: 1. What is genre? 2. What is the genre of the book we are discussing?


Grade 4  
Lesson: A look at libraries. A look history of libraries.
Read: Library Lil.
Competencies: Understand purpose of a library. Independently, select grade-level appropriate literary fiction in a variety of genres.
Use literacy strategies to determine readability of a source.
Common Core Standards:  CC.1.3.4.K   Read and comprehend literary fiction on grade level, reading independently and proficiently.  CC.1.1.4.E Read with accuracy and fluency.
Essential questions: 1. Why do we have libraries?

Grade 3  
Lesson: Using Destiny. Students will be given an overview of how to search for books using Destiny.
Read: Library Dragon
Competencies: Locate library books using the OPAC. Independently, select grade-level appropriate literature in a variety of genres.
Common Core Standards:  CC.1.3.3.K   Read and comprehend literary fiction on grade level, reading independently and proficiently. 
CC.1.2.3.L   Read and comprehend literary non-fiction on grade level, reading independently and proficiently.
Essential questions: 1. What is an OPAC? , 2. How do I locate the books I want to read?


Grade 2   
Lesson: Proper book selection. Review the 5 finger rule.
Read: Goldisocks and the Three Liberians.
Competencies: Independently, select grade-level appropriate literature in a variety of genres.
Common Core Standard: CC.1.3.2.K  Read and comprehend literature on grade level.
Essential question: 1. What is an appropriate book for me?

Grade 1
Lesson: Library responsibilities.
Read: D.W.’s Library Card.
Competencies: Independently, select grade-level appropriate literature in a variety of genres.
Common Core Standard: CC.1.3.1.K  Read and comprehend literature on grade level.
Essential questions: 1. What is a library? 2. What is a librarian? 3. How do I take care of my books?

Kindergarten:
Lesson: Continue library book care lessons.
Activity: Continue discussing how to care for library books. Emphasize that library books belong to the library and must be cared for so others can enjoy them. Explain need to return books promptly.
Read: Mr. Wiggle’s Loves to Read.
Competencies: Demonstrate proper book handling skills.
Common Core Standard: CC.1.1.KA Utilize book handling skills.
Essential questions: 1. What is a library? 2. What is a librarian?

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to a new school year! 2014-15 looks like it will be a great year! We will be holding the Scholastic Book Fair in the library October 6-10, 2014.
